Jean Arnavielle

1881-1961

Biography

Jean Arnavielle, a multi-talented artist, was born in 1881 in Paris. His life and work were primarily expressed through landscape painting, revealing the beauty of the French countryside.

Coming from an artistic and commercial background, Jean Arnavielle grew up in the creative buzz of Quai Voltaire, where his parents, jewelers, provided him with a childhood filled with freedom. It was in this environment that his taste for art was forged, fueled by regular visits to the Cirque d’Hiver and various Parisian theaters, where he developed a passion for artistic critique and live performance.

His military service in Le Havre in 1901 marked a turning point in his life. He embarked on a journey along the Seine with a friend, discovering iconic places such as Pont-de-l’Arche and Rouen. These enchanting landscapes inspired his early works, which he showcased at the Salon des Indépendants in 1908.

In 1912, Arnavielle made his debut at the Galerie Devambez, sharing the spotlight with the renowned Spanish painter Ignacio Zuloaga, which brought him some recognition. During World War I, he volunteered and was assigned to the health service in Rouen. His painting, often compared to that of Albert Marquet, emerged for its ability to capture the light and atmosphere of the landscapes dear to him, particularly those of Normandy, Brittany, and Nièvre.

The artist also excelled in the field of engraving, joining the Nivernais school of engraving under the influence of Fernand Chalandre. His work was exhibited in various salons, both in Paris and internationally, including at the Royal Albert Hall in London. His involvement in bibliophilic projects, illustrating literary works and contributing to artistic publications, showcases his versatility.

Jean Arnavielle divided his life between Paris and Rouen, considering himself a “Rouennais at heart.” Upon his death in 1961, he left behind a flourishing artistic legacy, illustrating the splendor of French landscapes while conveying the depth of human experience.
