Maisie Napangardi Granites

1930-?

Biography

Maisie Granites Napangardi is an artist born in 1959 in Janyinki, a sacred site on the border of the Tanami Desert. She is a powerful voice of Aboriginal culture. Her work is marked by her Warlpiri heritage, originating from the lands of Mina Mina, a territory rich with the stories of her ancestors.

The community of Yuendumu, where Maisie grew up, is one of the largest isolated communities in central Australia. This fertile environment for creativity has seen the emergence of renowned artists, such as Felicity Robertson Nampitjinpa and the famous Dorothy Napangardi.

In this inspiring context, Maisie has established herself as a respected artist, using black and white dot painting techniques to bring her visions to life. Her works, often monochromatic, create an emotional and spiritual mapping of her country, with each dot symbolizing an ancestral spirit that has traversed these lands during the Dreamtime.

Today, Maisie’s works are displayed in prestigious institutions, such as the High Court of Australia, where her iconic painting pays tribute to the contributions of Warlpiri women to ancestral narratives.
